Job skills training and mentored internships to build economic stability

Overview:

  • COTS developed Work Right™ to help program participants obtain and manage enough income to stay in a home of their own.
  • Program provides a step-by-step process to rebuild self-esteem, re-establish hope, and position homeless adults for the best chance of successful long-term employment.
  • Every client builds his/her own Work Right™ plan with goals and action steps to enter the workforce. Initial positions might include volunteering at COTS, employment in a COTS agency position, or work with COTS’ employer partners in the local community.
  • Work Right™ participants learn fundamental life skills, transferable work skills, and specific job skills. Ultimately, clients develop and implement long-range, individualized career plans.

Two ways you can get involved are:

1. Volunteer as a Mentor:

  • The minimum length of commitment is three months.
  • Assist Work Right™ participants with resume writing, interview preparation, job search support, and job retention/coping skills.

2. Volunteer as a Guest Speaker:

  • You can make a short-term commitment to speak just once at the Mary Isaak Center or visit on a regular basis, for example, monthly or quarterly.
  • We welcome business owners, human resources professionals, and managers to share information about their company, employee expectations, and what skills and experience make a “good fit” for your environment.

We would like professionals from the following industries to come and talk about their work:

  • Culinary Arts
  • Health Care
  • Retail/Customer Service
  • Arts/Graphic Design
  • Biotech/Science
  • Specialty Trades (For example, carpentry, electrical, tile setting, welding, diesel mechanic, flooring, construction.)
  • Transportation
